Amazing Scenery. Dec 2019. The Bernina Pass is the high elevation point connecting the Engadin Valley to the north with the Poschiavo Valley to the south. You can drive or take the train or hike. The views at the pass itself are wonderful but so are the views approaching and departing the pass. It's an all-around win.

How long is the Bernina Pass? The pass spans 53.3 km (33.11 miles), running north-south from St. Moritz, in Switzerland's Engadin valley, to Tirano, in the Italian Province of Sondrio. The pass often experiences heavy traffic and numerous tour buses. The road to the summit is quite steep, hitting a 10.4% maximum slope on some of the ramps.

As tourism to the Swiss Alps began to increase in the late 1800s, the Bernina line was conceived as a way to transport even more tourists to the Engadine Valley, the Alpine region that includes St. Moritz, Pontresina, the Morteratsch glacier, and the Bernina Pass, the 2,253 meter-passage (7,392 feet) between the towering mountain peaks.

The Bernina Express is a train connecting Chur (or Davos) in Switzerland to Poschiavo in Switzerland and Tirano in Italy by crossing the Swiss Engadin Alps. For most of its journey, the train also runs along the World Heritage Site known as the Rhaetian Railway in the Albula / Bernina Landscapes.
